Tampa Bay Rays signed 16-year-old Cuban prospect

By Jerry Diaz/ @Jerryto94

The Tampa Rays had a budget of $5.7 million for the current international signing period. The Florida franchise reached an agreement with eight prospects, one of them Cuban, and for more than a million dollars bonus.

This figure is remarkable taking into account the data expressed above. This is the young José Lázaro Contreras, who will receive 1.05 million as a signing bonus.

The 16-year-old from Cienfuegos counts among his abilities good contact and especially great leg speed.

The hiring of Contreras confirms the increased interest in the Rays for Cuban talent. In addition to big leaguers Yandy Díaz and Randy Arozarena, he joins Sandy Gastón and Patrick Meriño on the farms.
